Imagining a Museum of British Colonialism

On the 10th November 2020, we brought together five guest speakers – and over a thousand viewers – to imagine the future of museums. Our fantastic line up of panellists, including William Dalrymple, Priyamvada Gopal, Nana Oforiatta Ayim, Chao Tayiana, and chair Renée Landell, spoke about confronting Britain’s past and its heritage of colonialism and slavery. In imagining what a Museum of British Colonialism might look like, the event grappled with questions such as: which stories are told, and whose voices are amplified? Which spaces and objects are relevant? How do we challenge the current production of knowledge, and de-centre Western hegemony from museum practice? What, in doing so, is our collective mission?
